Delivering solutions that work for Architectural masonry

Brikmat support system: plastic mat

Brikmat plastic support mat is a fully tested and BBA certified product that can be used with all types of masonry. It is injection moulded from polypropylene and has two main functions, these being to support the weight of heavy masonry units while mortar cures, and to gauge the mortar joint.

Typically, mortar is 'compressed' or 'squeezed' out from the joint under the weight of the masonry units during a build, resulting in many practical problems for the bricklayer, and programme related problems for the contractor, by limiting the height that can be achieved in a single lift.

By eliminating bed joint compression caused by the weight of the masonry units, and by at the same time providing support feet which are set to give the correct mortar bed height, the use of Brikmat can enable more courses to be laid in a single lift, thus ensuring that the specified gauge height of the build can be achieved without any of the typical problems normally encountered.

Properties

Brikmat plastic masonry support mat is available in two gauge heights, 9mm (Blue) and 10.7mm (White), to compensate for any tolerance variations in masonry materials, and is manufactured from light durable plastic (polypropylene).

Packaging

Brikmat plastic masonry support mat is packaged in cardboard boxes containing 25 lengths per box, which equates to 21.75 linear metres of product per box.

Boxes are colour coded with a blue scheme for the 9mm mat,

and orange for the 10.7mm mat. This makes the task of visual identification simple.

Usage

The guide opposite illustrates coverage when building with 215mm x 440mm blocks.

Quality assurance

With full BBA approval, Brikmat has now been certified fit for use on all new construction, and meets the requirements of the NHBC and Zurich building guarantees.

The table opposite indicates a range and sizes of wall ties that can be accommodated when using Brikmat plastic masonry support mat. Alternatively, thicker wall ties can be accommodated by placing them in gaps between runs of the product.

How it works

The diagram below shows how Brikmat plastic masonry support mat eliminates bed joint compression and instability when building with heavy masonry units, resulting in a stable, accurate construction built without any loss of gauge height.
