Positioning the product

To ensure adequate mortar coverage of the longitudinal edges of the product, it is essential that the product be placed centrally on top of each previously laid course of masonry, making regular checks to ensure that the product does not skew or decentralise when the mortar is applied.

Applying the mortar bed

It is important to ensure that a full mortar bed free from voids is achieved. To accomplish this, excess mortar is applied to the joint, the next masonry unit positioned and pressed down firmly until it engages with the support feet and the excess extruded mortar is removed and returned to the spot board.

The product will ensure that no additional compression of the bed joint occurs during the laying of additional courses and will minimise the need for cleaning of the masonry units.

Tools

The use of traditional tools such as plumb lines, line bands and spirit levels will still be required to ensure the wall is vertical, and the courses are maintaining a level aspect.

Checking gauge height

In keeping with good brick laying practice, the use of a gauge tape or tape measure is required to ensure that the course heights are kept in specification.

Correcting gauge height

Interchanging from the existing Brikmat gauge height to an alternative Brikmat gauge height (e.g. 10mm to 9mm) can be done to correct courses drifting out of specification.

Corners

When using Brikmat at corners, position to give at least 10mm mortar coverage at the end of the product.

Wall ties

Wall ties can be easily accommodated within the length of the product. Wall ties can be placed either above or below the Brikmat product ensuring that they are placed as close to the centre of the bed joint as possible.

Damp proof course

Brikmat should not be used in the same mortar bed as the damp proof course.

Cutting

Brikmat reinforcement can be cut onsite using a grinding wheel or bolt crops.

Brikmat plastic support mat can be cut onsite using snips, or a trowel edge against a block/brick.

Spacing of the support feet

Brikmat reinforcement can have the support feet clipped on at intervals to suit specific customer requirements, based on project block sizes being used. Please contact Brikmat for further information.

Brikmat plastic support mat feet are set at predermined intervals that have been carefully calculated to accommodate most block sizes. To overcome a rare occurrence where the support feet fall on the perpendicular mortar joint, the mat should be moved/slid along the block to a more appropriate position, or alternatively, cut the Brikmat and space accordingly to a more appropriate position.

Resistance to frost damage

The presence of Brikmat support feet will have no effect on the freeze-thaw resistance of the finished wall provided that the product is placed centrally in the joint.

Performance under load

The masonry support feet will not adversely affect the ability of the wall to sustain and transmit compression loads.

Durability

The presence of the masonry support feet in the mortar beds will have no significant effect on the durability of the final structure.
